Julie Crabtree-Pfannes
Fine Art Embroidery
I studied Textiles, Fashion and Embroidery
at Mansfield College of Arts, in Nottinghamshire,
England. Graduating with credit ratings in
City and Guilds of London degree courses.
And taught at the College before immigrating
to Canada, then moving to Wisconsin, USA.
and for a time in Western Massachusetts.
I now spend my time working and developing textural stitched and
painted landscapes by utilizing the sewing machine free motion, and
drawing freely over the canvas with a needle and thread. Then adding
hand stitching with anything to give the desired effect.
Experimenting with many embroidery art techniques and the use of various
mediums, including hand dyed, distressed fabrics and
threads etc.
I have had my artwork published in several magazines, and am included
in a book of collaborated artists work. More recently my work has
been used for a journal cover and a CD.
My work has been purchased for corporate and private collections,
having won many awards. I show my work in several Galleries and
Attend juried Art shows around the Midwest. I also teach workshops
as time allows.
My love of the outdoors and ever changing landscapes are a
constant inspiration for me to explore. Texture is everywhere, from the
gnarled entwined tree roots to frozen ice sculptures
distorted by the eroding winds of Lake Superior's northern shoreline
to fossilized rock formations. Nature has an endless supply of
uniqueness to offer, which I try to capture and emulate in my
distinctive style.
Using my sketchbook and taking photos while out traveling as a
reference, later to be used as an inspirational starting point for my
work and working from my imagination to create one of a kind
pieces.
Best Wishes
Julie
